Currently staying in Fiji with his wife Tory and three children, Richard has lived in New Zealand most of his life.
He has been involved in the building industry for 19 years, and is an award winning Master Builder. He started his own company, Richard Sexton Builders Ltd in 2004, and also spent few years lecturing and teaching construction.
A high standard of quality, and attention to detail, makes Richard an exceptional craftsman. specialized in new home builds but I am also experienced in other building work including renovations, additions, light commercial, shop fit outs, etc.
While my main focus has been more on architectural homes in recent years, I have also spent a number of years contracting to other home building companies and developers in the volume home market.
Over the past three years construction work has taken a back seat as I have been working as a lecturer at UCOL (Universal College of Learning). Here I have been able to share my knowledge and passion of building with others, while increasing my own knowledge and challenging myself through further study.
In this role I have also been instrumental in developing new teaching and learning resources, and designing assessments to fit the new New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (level three). While also teaching this course in a full year program, and a night class for apprentice builders.
I am a Licenced Building Practitioner, and hold a current first aid certificate.
I have excellent interpersonal skills, and believe that honest and open communication is always the way to achieving the best results. I would rather focus on the solution than the problem, and am very pragmatic when doing so. I am creative, curious, and observant.
I am currently the president of the Resisted Master Builders, Wairarapa branch. During the two years I have been president the executive committee and I have made some great achievements, like increasing the membership of our branch by 25%. We have also increased the engagement of our members from only a dozen or so attending events we hold, to consistently having 60+ people in attendance.
I am also on the Board of Trustees for Douglas Park School, which is where my children go, or have gone to school. This board oversees the governance and direction of the school at a high level. The role I play on this board is to oversee both the property, and health and safety portfolios.
I am adventurous and love being outdoors, especially if it involves the ocean.
I enjoy spending time with my family, and am making the most of time with our kids while they are young. I’m involved with their schools and sports teams etc, and also enjoy camping, tramping, and going to the beach together.
